Text in Dutch & English. - Leonard Freed, in 1929 geboren in een arbeidersgezin in New York, studeerde aanvankelijk toegepaste kunst. Na een reis liftend door Europa en Noord-Afrika begint hij te fotograferen en vestigt zich van 1956 tot 1969 in Amsterdam. Teruggekeerd in New York bereist hij vele landen om reportages te maken van bevolkingen en oorlogen en werkt hij voor het fotopersbureau Magnum. Zijn werk oogst grote waardering op tentoonstellingen, bij verschijning in tijdschriften en speciale uitgaven in boekvorm. In dit overzicht zijn bijna 200 zwartwitfoto's opgenomen van zijn onderwerp: portretten van mensen over de hele wereld. In de inleiding licht Leonard zijn werk toe: ideeën, techniek, methode van persoonsbenadering en hoe hij in zijn portretten de figuren een psychologische en sociale inhoud poogt te geven. Dit bereikt hij door ze te betrappen op spontane momenten in een zinrijke omgeving. De korte toelichting bij de foto's geeft aanleiding tot meer algemene bespiegelingen. Alle teksten zijn in het Nederlands en Engels. Naast de goed afgedrukte foto's is in de mooi verzorgde uitgave ook een overzicht van tentoonstellingen, uitgaven en onderscheidingen en een kort biografisch overzicht opgenomen.
