This volume features 19 reports to the International Congress for School Effectiveness from Europe, the Americas, Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East, identifying a diverse range of critical issues, a diversity of policy responses and a diversity of practical applications, all in the field of education, and all of which are aimed at improving the effectiveness of schooling. The essays demonstrate how the links between effectiveness and improvement have grown in recent years, as well as the substantial impact that the research community is beginning to have on national educational policy, particularly with the world-wide movement for reform and its focus on the self-managing school. The book concludes with a chapter on the future prospects and problems for school effectiveness and school improvement research and practice. It suggests that we are moving rapidly away from what might be considered second-millennium thinking about education towards a third millennium view. Schools as we know them must change if they are to satisfy the needs of a changing world and the last chapter identifies what might be considered as characteristics of third-millennium schools.
