Il volume è dedicato a David "Chim" Seymour (1911-1956), uno dei più leggendari fotoreporter del XX secolo, co-fondatore dell'agenzia Magnum Photos insieme a Henri Cartier-Bresson e Robert Capa. Nato a Varsavia da una famiglia benestante di ebrei polacchi, David Seymour, al secolo David Szymin, inizia la carriera fotografica a Parigi nel 1933, dove frequenta e diventa amico di Robert Capa e Henri Cartier-Bresson. Intellettuale umanista, appassionato di politica, conoscitore di sei lingue, David Seymour è uno dei primi fotoreporter di guerra. Per importanti riviste segue i più significativi eventi politici dell'epoca, documentando il suo tempo senza riserve, nutrito da una forte coscienza sociale - come traspare dalla serie "Children of Europe", realizzata per l'Unicef negli anni del dopoguerra - e determinato a essere sempre "nel cuore dell'azione". La sua carriera è qui ripercorsa attraverso oltre 120 fotografie in bianco e nero, divise in 9 sezioni: Francia, la guerra civile in Spagna, Germania, l'Europa dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, i bambini della guerra, Israele, Egitto, celebrità, ritratti di Chim. Fu ucciso a Suez nel 1956, mentre stava preparando un servizio per "Newsweek" sul conflitto arabo-israeliano, quattro giorni dopo la firma dell'armistizio: la sua eredità è rappresentata dagli scatti indimenticabili che ha lasciato, dai quali trapela un profondo e sincero rispetto per l'uomo e per le tragedie che ha vissuto.
