In recent years, a considerable amount of effort has been devoted, both in industry and academia, towards the development of advanced methods of control theory with focus on its practical implementation in various fields of human activity such as space control, robotics, control applications in marine systems, control processes in agriculture and food production.
Control Systems: Theory and Applications consists of selected best papers which were presented at XXIV International conference on automatic control “Automatics 2017” (September 13-15, 2017, Kyiv, Ukraine) organized by Ukrainian Association on Automatic Control (National member organization of IFAC – International Federation on Automatic Control) and National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine. More than 120 presentations where discussed at the conference, with participation of the scientists from the numerous countries.
The book is divided into two main parts, a first on Theory of Automatic Control (5 chapters) and the second on Control Systems Applications (8 chapters). The selected chapters provide an overview of challenges in the area of control systems design, modeling, engineering and implementation and the approaches and techniques that relevant research groups within this area are employing to try to resolve these.

The second part of the book is centered on real-world applications across various industries. One chapter focuses on improving energy efficiency in intelligent control systems by modeling situational-event dynamics using fuzzy logic and probabilistic frameworks. Another presents an ellipsoidal filtering method for estimating the pose of uncooperative spacecraft from visual data, applying machine learning to reduce computational overhead in pose recognition. A detailed study of fuzzy control design for floating docks examines the optimization of control parameters for low-tonnage vessel operations using a hybrid method of expert rules and numerical tuning. In the context of food production, the volume addresses efficiency control in multi-assortment processes, modeling decision-making under risk and uncertainty and using logical-dynamic structures to manage batch variability. The coordinate determination of satellite imagery is treated through various geometric calibration algorithms, with attention to stereoscopic methods, photogrammetry, and in-flight error correction. Other chapters include the development of robotic electrotechnical systems for greenhouse environments, where algorithms manage real-time phytomonitoring and atmospheric adjustment, and the use of spectral imaging systems for remote crop monitoring, integrating infrared and visible-spectrum data to optimize harvesting strategies and biomass usage in bioenergy production. A final contribution presents a combined multivariable stabilization system for controlling adsorption processes in hydrogen purification, minimizing thermodynamic losses through a dual-circuit control architecture. Throughout the volume, emphasis is placed on practical algorithms, simulation models, and engineering applicability. Theoretical rigor is paired with examples from aerospace, agriculture, manufacturing, and remote sensing, demonstrating how control systems can be adapted to various physical and organizational constraints.
