536 pages // This book is the first to describe in a plain, concise way the technology of rare metals based on geology and geochemistry. A description is given of the main sources, enrichment of minerals and ores by gravitation, magnetic, electric, flotation and chlorination methods as well as the self-accumulation of rare elements in half-products and waste materials of the metallurgical industry. Because of their unusual properties, the rare elements are extracted by unconventional methods. Among them, the hydrometallurgical methods are the basic ones. The sources of rare elements grow scarcer. Emphasis is therefore given to the extraction methods which allow the isolation of groups of elements from the mixtures, followed by their precise separation. The aim of the book is to call attention to the rational use of crude materials, not only in terms of technology but also with regard to protection of the environment. The book is addressed to chemistry students, and to engineers and metallurgists concerned with metallurgy of the non-iron metals.
