Sinopsis

I have seen red sand on Rome streets when warm Sirocco winds from the Sahara Desert blow it across the Mediterranean Sea. While passing over the Sea, the Sirocco wind picks up cool moisture, producing the red rainfall known in southern Italy as "blood rain". (Stuart Stuart)

The longing for a safe space is a key message of this complex novel, a space where we can share experiences and hash out difficult problems. Blood Rain on St. Mark's Square offers an apt space for communal nostalgia, for the times when community was a common part of our lives. Italy’s squares—the piazzas—are such places, where major communal actions begin and end. In today’s world, there is a longing for community even by those who have never experienced it. As our tongue seeks the missing tooth, so too do our minds seek those places and experiences lost to us in time. This may be a negative pursuit filled with anger for what has been lost, or a positive pursuit filled with hope to re-find the missing element. The Square is both a mental space of communal memory and is a physical space around which this novel centers. Metaphorically, the square is that space where we come together for momentous celebrations or sad remembrances. This novel urges us to carefully tend this space, and in Gaither Stewart’s inimitable style, he offers us an opportunity to reflect on our humanity and to see what we lose when we are torn apart.
