《谭嗣同与晚清社会》分五章、一个附录，第一章为谭嗣同维新思想源流，分别从传统文化、西学及日本明治维新武士精神等方面，来追溯形成谭嗣同维新思想的各种理论来源，并对谭嗣同的维新思想的影响加以涉猎。第二章为谭嗣同维新活动举要，对谭嗣同在湖南维新运动的活动予以勾勒，并对谭嗣同创办报刊的活动进行研究。第三章为谭嗣同社会交往探微，分别选取三个有代表性的人物，即湖南巡抚陈宝箴、老师刘人熙、父亲谭继洵，分析他们对谭嗣同的影响。第四章为谭嗣同生平事迹辨正，对谭嗣同的科举经历、百日维新期间的重要事件进行考订。第五章为谭嗣同研究文献整理，主要包括对谭嗣同信札的考订和编年。附录部分为谭嗣同年谱，采用实证考辨的方法，通过比勘史料，校订正误，力求通过史料，展现谭嗣同的一生经历，以及部分身后事，以求为谭嗣同的研究奠定比较坚实的基础。
