《天国之秋》是裴士锋的第二部作品，书中作者以外国人的视角讲述了发生在19世纪、为我们所熟知的太平天国战争的历史。与传统的将太平天国当做一次进步的农民运动不同，作者以细腻的笔触，还原了战争的本来面目，突出了战争的残酷性，同时，也分析了太平天国战争怎样塑造近代中国。作者也用了比较多的篇幅研究了西方列强的介入对于战争走势的影响，以及作为儒家和传统代表的曾国藩和作为亲西方和渴望现代化的洪仁玕之间，两种观念的剧烈碰撞。本书2012年2月由KNOPF出版，随即受到很多关注。基辛格和史景迁也撰文推荐此书，更有读者赞扬普拉特的作品已经超过了他的师父史景迁的《太平天国》一书。
