先后入驻伯克利的居民，不仅企图在文化艺术上力创新局，更在住屋形态上寻求划时代的变革。他们主张建筑要与自然共生、呼应环境风土，既要善用太阳光，让植物发挥降温减热效益，更要追求建筑造型与周遭环境和谐共融的美感。当年虽然没有“节能减碳”的口号，但其顺应自然的精义，比起现代人在地球暖化的催逼下，纷纷扬起“绿建筑”的大旗，更要提早了一百多年。《伯克利大学城百年建筑风云录》写的多半是20世纪初期完成的建筑，其中校园里的经典建筑多已名列“国家注册历史性场所”、“联邦历史资源名录”、“加州注册历史地标”、“伯克利城市地标”。校园外的住宅建筑，也有不少是在“伯克利城市地标”之列，即便不在其中，也早已跻身为百万名宅。
