1921年，喜仁龙得到民国总统特许，考察了民国政府驻地中南海、北京的城墙与城门，并在溥仪的陪同下，进入故宫实地勘察和摄影。本书正是这次考察的精华集锦。
全书分为上下两册。上册原名《中国北京皇城写真全图》，首版于1926年。收录了14幅建筑绘图，300余张照片。全面展现了紫禁城的城门、角楼、殿宇等建筑的结构与装饰特点，如实记录下了中南海、北海、圆明园等皇家园林的原貌。
下册原名《北京的城墙和城门》，首版于1924年。收录了十余万字工程勘察记录，50余幅测绘图，详细考证了北京城墙和城门的建筑构造和历史变迁，并附有130余幅极具艺术性和视觉震撼力的照片。这是现存记录老北京城墙和城门很翔实可靠的文献，更是后世学者无法超前的巅峰之作。
