WiMAX stands for the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access and is also known as the IEEE 802.16 wireless metropolitan area network. Along with the development of mobile communication and broadband technology, WiMAX has become a hot spot for global telecom operators and manufacturers. In this work, after a brief introduction about the broadband wireless technologies and the different IEEE 802.16 standards, an accurately explanation of WiMAX and its technical aspects is included. At the end, it is possible to examine the different applications implemented with WiMAX and a brief comparison with other wireless technologies.

Omar Talal Hamid was born in Iraq, 1987. He received his master degree in Computer Engineering in 2014 at Cankaya University, Turkey. At present, he is a lecturer at Cihan University- Erbil, Iraq. Shahad Fais Thabet was born in Iraq, 1992. She has finished her master degree in Electronic Engineering in 2017 at the University of Technology, Iraq.
