Acousticcryptanalysis is a side channel attack which exploits sounds emitted bycomputers or machines. Modern acoustic cryptanalysis mostly focuses onsounds emitted by computer keyboards and internal computer componentsbut historically it has also been applied to impact printers andelectromechanical cipher machines.Victor Marchetti and John D. Markseventually negotiated the declassification of CIA acoustic intercepts ofthe sounds of cleartext printing from encryption machines. Technicallythis method of attack dates to the time of FFT hardware being cheapenough to perform the task-in this case the late 1960s to mid-1970s.However, using other more primitive means such acoustical attacks weremade in the mid-1950s.VDM Verlag, Dudweiler Landstraße 99, 66123 Saarbrücken 152 pp. Englisch.
