In themathematics of coding theory, the Plotkin bound, named after MorrisPlotkin, is a bound on the maximum possible number of codewords inbinary codes of given length n and given minimum distance d.We say acode is binary, if the codewords use symbols from the binary alphabet{0,1}. In particular, if all codewords have a fixed length n, we speakof a binary code of length n. Coding theory is the study of theproperties of codes and their fitness for a specific application. Codesare used for data compression, cryptography, error-correction and morerecently also for network coding. Codes are studied by variousscientific disciplines-such as information theory, electricalengineering, mathematics, and computer science-for the purpose ofdesigning efficient and reliable data transmission methods. Thistypically involves the removal of redundancy and the correction (ordetection) of errors in the transmitted data.VDM Verlag, Dudweiler Landstraße 99, 66123 Saarbrücken 172 pp. Englisch.
