The impetus forboth movements was the glaring reality of social problems and thequestion over how to best attack them. This debate is arguably theearliest example of a larger debate within social work - how isknowledge acquired This debate pits positivism against post-positivismin the pursuit of achieving respect as a profession. The positivisticargument asserts knowledge has to be observable and testable(quantitative), free from bias, and ultimately replicable if it is tohave any merit. Post-positivists argue there is no way to completelyeliminate bias, and knowledge can be obtained via qualitative researchmethods. The debate reached its greatest intensity in the 1980sreflecting the debate within the larger world of the social sciences.VDM Verlag, Dudweiler Landstraße 99, 66123 Saarbrücken 72 pp. Englisch.
