Neo Japanesque Graphics refers to unique visuals based on traditional Japanese drawings, motifs, patterns, and calligraphy infused with contemporary charm—for example, a poster, mimicking a Hokusai painting, in which a new liquid-crystal color TV set floats on an ocean looking over Mount Fuji; another advertising poster showing a sumo wrestler and a geisha girl in sneakers jogging as if they were athletes; a minimally designed package in the traditional Japanese charcoal gray wrapped up in a fine paper yet emblazoned with a very modern logo. Recent years have witnessed the creative world breaking away from traditional Japanese-style designs produce myriad works based on more contemporary renditions of Japanese aesthetic sensibilities. Thus it was the editorial intention to present outstanding examples of "new Japanese-style design" grouped by media such as advertising, packaging, and book design. Collected in this book are works that are at once traditional yet new, nostalgic yet fresh. In other words, "neo Japanesque" is defined not by design that follows in the footsteps of the past, but rather works that deviate from the conventional design arena to the cutting edge.
