At the center of this aesthetic, independent of subjective thought or individual systems of reference, artist Marcus Matthias Keupp places the idea of molecular recombination: all life in nature, from monads to mammals, can be traced to the recombination of simple modules. In the simplest case these modules are atoms that come together to form molecules; in more complex cases, they are macromolecules that group themselves into self-reproducing units, or cells that organize into functional units in order to enable the emergence of more complex forms of life. Such recombination evolves partly in accordance with certain laws, partly it is chaotic. Keupp’s work shown in modular broaches the issue of the conflict in nature between statics and dynamics, between modular recombination and dissolution.
