In the mid 1970s Larry E. McPherson made an amazing series of cow photographs at a Midwestern farm. The setting was the natural oak savannahs on the Illinois-Wisconsin border where the cows were put out to pasture. The pictures, some made in day light and some made at night, capture a range of the cows activities and moods. In 1978 the photographs were exhibited in a one-person exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago and several group exhibitions that traveled in the United States and in Europe. This is the first time this distinctive series of photographs has been made into a book. Larry E. McPherson was born in Newark, Ohio, in 1943. He has taught since 1978 at the University of Memphis, where he is an associate professor of art. He has received two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in Photography and a Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the International Museum of Photography in Rochester, New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Museum of Modern art in New York City. He is the author of two previous photographic books, Memphis (2002), and Beirut City Center (2006).
