In cooperation with NAi Uitgevers, Rotterdam At last - an in-depth monograph on the celebrated Dutch group of architects, Mecanoo. Since its founding in Delft in 1984, Mecanoo Architects has achieved increasing recognition and appreciation across the globe. With numerous buildings constructed in an inventive and innovative style they have set new standards in modern architecture. More recently their economics faculty at the University of Utrecht and the library at the Technical University of Delft have propelled them into the limelight. In this long-awaited publication 20 of their most significant projects of recent years are documented. In accompanying essays, founding partner Francine Houben, analyses the projects by means of 10 fundamental statements and explores those factors which give Mecanoo's creative process its distinctive quality - contrast, composition and complexity.

In this book Francine Houben presents a personal account of her experiences. Text and image convey her original and authentic attitude, views and feelings about architecture. She has made a selection from her many Mecanoo projects for this publication. A home and a canal house. A garden town and a water town. A secondary school, a polytechnic and a university library. The public space of a historic city, a park and a square in a medieval city. A vision of mobility and infrastructure and an ecological new town. A hotel and an underground office. A ruin, a theatre, a decor for an opera, a museum and an exhibition. And finally a chapel in a cemetery. Each of these projects is exemplary of her vision and illustrates the three core elements of how she conceives architecture: composition, contrast and complexity.
