9783540550624: Dynamics of Science-based Innovation

Sinopsis

The transfer of the latest scientific results to commercial innovation has become a crucial factor in today's markets. This implies that competitiveness in modern technologies is no longer the responsibility of the manufacturing industry alone, but that it involves a mutual interdependence with the largely publicly financed science institutions. This volume presents the state-of-the-art in this interesting and growing field between (economic) innovation research and the sociology of science. It is organized in three sections. Part 1 describes advanced methodologies (patent analysis, bibliometrics, cluster analysis and cognitive cartography, for example). Part 2 presents selected trends in the organization of the relationship between science and innovation. Here, two quite different countries are cited - Japan and the former German Democratic Republic. Part 3 includes technology case studies of science-based innovation in molecular beam epitaxy, laser medicine, polyimide plastics, fuel cells and factory automation. The 11 authors conclude by offering recommendations for public science and innovation policy and industrial technology management.
