Wind Turbines addresses all those professionally involved in research, development, manufacture and operation of wind turbines. It provides a cross-disciplinary overview of modern wind turbine technology and an orientation in the associated technical, economic and environmental fields. It is based on the author's experience gained over decades designing wind energy converters with a major industrial manufacturer and, more recently, in technical consulting and in the planning of large wind park installations, with special attention to economics. The second edition accounts for the emerging concerns over increasing numbers of installed wind turbines. Ausgehend von den historischen Wurzeln der Windkraftnutzung führt der Autor über die technisch-physikalischen Grundlagen, den konstruktiven Aufbau, die Einsatzkonzeptionen und die Umweltverträglichkeit bis hin zu Wirtschaftlichkeitsuntersuchungen der Stromerzeugung mit Windenergie. Der letztgenannte Aspekt wird insbesondere durch eine fundierte Analyse der Herstellkosten von Windenergieanlagen und durch die Untersuchung der Bedingungen, unter denen sie wirtschaftlich eingesetzt werden können, behandelt. Die zweite, überarbeitete Auflage legt einen zusätzlichen Schwerpunkt auf grundsätzliche Probleme, die sich mit dem zunehmenden Ausbau der Windkraftnutzung verstärkt stellendie Integration in die öffentliche Energieversorgung und die Umweltverträglichkeit dieser an sich umweltfreundlichen Energie. Das Buch liest sich ausgesprochen flüssig, nicht zuletzt dank der ausgezeichneten Übersetzung ins Englische, und ist dabei sehr informativ. Der Autor ist bei MAN seit über 15 Jahren auf dem Gebiet der Windenergienutzung tätig und zur Zeit für Planung und Bau großer Windparks verantwortlich.
