Distinctive Styles and Authorship in Alternative Comics asks why a romantic construction of authorship subsists in critical discourse on North American comics, especially comics published outside of traditional mainstream genres. Close reading artistic styles in alternative comics serially published between 1980 and 2018 - Art Spiegelman, Alison Bechdel, Jason Lutes - helps us illuminate our own participation in the construction. It also identifies benefits and limits of formal analysis.
