Anläßlich des Second International Congress of Musical Signification, der 1988 an der Universität Helsinki stattfand, kamen Musikwissenschaftler, Komponisten, Semiotiker und Philosophen zusammen, um musikalische Phänomene auf ihrer Bedeutungsebene zu diskutieren.
Im Anschluß an diesen Kongreß wurden die wissenschaftlich bedeutendsten Vorträge zum dem vorliegenden Band zusammengetragen. Dieser reflektiert den enormen Fortschritt, der während der letzten zwanzig Jahre innerhalb einer relativ neuen Subdisziplin der Semiotik, der Musiksemiotik, erreicht wurde. Somit enthält "Musical Signification" die vollständigste Anthologie der derzeitigen Diskussion innerhalb der Musiksemiotik.
