Six stages, five rules and one loop — the complete anatomy of how a decision is actually made, and how to make yours better.
A decision is the moment you convert possibility into commitment: you close a future that is still open and spend something you cannot recover — time, money, trust, your one life — usually before you can be certain, and often without noticing you did it. Not deciding is deciding.
The SMA Decision Code is one instrument, run at the scale of the stakes. Six stages — Signal, Meaning, Alternatives, Danger, Execution, Consequence — carry any choice from the first flicker of information to the moment you live with the result. Five ATTIA rules hold the discipline across them. And it runs as a loop, because every consequence becomes the next signal — which is why an honest decider improves for a lifetime while a careless one repeats the same error and calls it bad luck.
The book climbs one axis, stakes and reversibility, from tea or coffee to the nuclear threshold — through hiring and firing, money, medicine, love, risk and war; the cult of the founder; the grand decisions of nations examined with figures rather than adjectives; and the machines that have read everything and lived nothing. In every chapter a passage marked From My Own Ledger opens the author’s own record: the calls that worked, and the ones that did not. It closes with yours — twelve tables to audit the decider you have been, and build the one you will be.
For readers of Thinking, Fast and Slow, Thinking in Bets and Decisive — one instrument you can actually run, scaled to the weight of the choice in front of you.
Inside: 27 chapters in seven parts · a Field Card to photograph at the end of every chapter · the twelve components of a strategic decision · the Reader’s Ledger · a glossary · a 30-day practice.
“The SMA Decision Code takes the decision out of the lecture hall and into the reader’s hands by making it rigorous, lived and profoundly practical.” — General Ihab Mostafa, PhD, Instructor, Police Academy, Egypt
