Sinopsis

The most common thing I hear parents and coaches shouting out during youth soccer games is, "stop bunching-up" and "spread out". It's almost like the ball is a magnet and the players are metal, with every player simultaneously being drawn towards the ball at the same time. As many times as the coach shouts, "get in your positions", it has little to no effect. During training sessions the coach often stops play, showing players where they should be in relation to the ball, trying to teach spacing and positioning. Most coaches find that teaching proper positioning is an ongoing coach intensive task. If only there was a better way! The good news is that this book will help. By using a color coded gridding system, teaching positional soccer can be done using a player directed approach, instead of a coach directed approach. This is accomplished by dividing the field into sections that coordinate with a specific color and player position, as players are allowed to exchange colors when they interchange sections/positions. The field can also be sectioned into segments to teach proper attacking and defensive team shape and structure. The function or purpose of using grids is to naturally teach players the positional game, providing them a framework and organization to operate within. The grids allow the coach to step back from the practice, as the grid helps directs the player experience. However, using one positional grid is not a blanket solution to teaching positional soccer, there still needs to be a logical teaching progression throughout the various age groups. Adjustments should be made for each age group in terms of number of players, field size, rules, types of grids, length of games, conditioned play, ways to score and the use of goalkeepers. At the end of the book, suggested age appropriate guidelines are given. Remember, using positional grids are just one tool coaches can use to teach positional soccer, it is not meant to be the only method, rather a great way to compliment the things you already use.
