When it comes to mission trips, is it enough to just go?
Millions of people go on short-term mission trips every year. Yet many missionaries secretly abhor having to host them, and others openly criticize the practice altogether.
So, what's going wrong, and is there even a place for these trips in the modern church?
Drawing from over two decades of ministry experience, Lessons from the Field takes an honest, practical, and even humorous look at the problems plaguing short-term missions. But it doesn't stop at diagnosis. This book makes the case that mission trips, when done well, are one of the most powerful discipleship tools the church has—providing an actionable roadmap to prove it.
From preparing hearts and minds before departure to structuring trips that become pivotal moments in someone's walk with Christ, Lessons from the Field is a guide for anyone who wants their next mission trip to produce kingdom impact that lasts long after the team goes home. With sections directed toward trip members, team leaders, and hosting missionaries, this book equips everyone involved to turn short-term trips into long-term fruit.

Matthew is a missionary, ministry leader, and lifelong advocate for short-term missions who has spent over two decades discipling believers. His experience spans years of service in the Dominican Republic as a missionary, as well as in the United States equipping missionaries, churches, and organizations to transform short-term mission trips into lasting kingdom impact.Having served on every side of the mission trip experience-as a participant, a team leader, and a hosting missionary-Matthew brings a perspective few in the space can offer. His passion is helping the church see short-term missions not as an isolated event but as one of the most effective discipleship tools available, a gift worth stewarding well.Matthew lives in Colorado Springs with his wife and three kids, where he leads Adventure Ministries, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to improving the effectiveness of short-term missions. When he's not training and discipling the next generation of mission trip members and facilitators, you'll find him and his family adventuring in the nearby mountains.
