Dr. Mitch Abrams is a sport, clinical, and forensic psychologist, licensed in NY and NJ, and CEO of Learned Excellence for Athletes and Abrams Psychological Services, which has offices in New Jersey but has consulted nationally for over 25 years. He is the nation’s expert on anger in sports, as well as having expertise in sexual and domestic violence, in addition to trauma. He has developed comprehensive prevention programs, including the Abrams Model of Sexual Violence Prevention, which integrates forensic concepts in sport psychology approaches. As a pioneer, he also developed Entourage Training, a system that takes a member of the athlete’s peer group and trains them in conflict resolution, gang identification, social media training, prediction of consequences, and directs them towards self-defense and weapons training as needed. Not only has he developed these innovations, Dr. Abrams has also trained sport psychologists, parents, sports organizations, and coaches about these issues.
Having worked inside the New Jersey State Prison system since 2000, he has twenty-five years of correctional experience and is the Chief Psychologist for University Correctional Health Care, Rutgers University’s service delivery arm which provides medical, dental, and mental health services for the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
He is also on faculty at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and has been adjunct faculty at Brooklyn College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Long Island University – Post Campus.
In addition to I’m Not F*cking Angry!, Dr. Abrams wrote Anger Management in Sport–Understanding and Controlling Violence in Athletes in 2010.
Dr. Abrams is a Fellow of both Division 47 of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Sport, Exercise & Performance Psychology, and the Association of Applied Sport Psychology, where he founded and co-chairs the Anger & Violence in Sport Special Interest Group.
Undeniably, Dr. Abrams is a kid from the streets. He was raised in Starrett City, an area of Brooklyn, New York, that molded much of his worldview. He received his Bachelor of Science from Brooklyn College and earned his Master of Science in Applied Psychology and his Doctorate of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology from C.W. Post/Long Island University.
