Sinopsis

Remaining Folly is Richard Beck’s love letter to Folly Beach, a chronicle of how this “red-haired stepchild” beach community of the Charleston, S.C. area transformed into the unique, colorful, fun-loving place it is today—filled with an eclectic mix of characters. He takes us on a journey from Folly’s first recognition as a place where the sick, dead, and dying of the colonial era were disembarked before entering Charleston through multiple challenges to its existence and identity. Each step of its transformation from wilderness island to thriving beach town is recounted with devoted care.

This story of the extraordinary activism of its people during the period makes for an instructive and memorable tale. But that story is by no means over. Pressures to change the character of Folly and other communities continue…and increase with every passing year.
