5 stars Artistic display of writing skills In Saint Elms Deep you are taken on the trip to Great Vale where Chelda was brought up. The journey as you would expect was one of surprises and the territory before arriving in the town was legendary in its treacherous valleys, forests and hills. While reading this book you will be taken on a ride so rough and yet so moving as the characters interact with each other and grow bonds that will protect them against the enemy. A great read for a holiday period where you want to curl up and live in a fantasy world for a while. --BookLover 5 stars You must read MR Mathias to appreciate the manner in which he holds together characters through long novels and brings solutions to all the adventures he creates. - Grady Harp, Top 100, Vine Voice "Hall of Fame" Winterlands can make for brutal and grueling fantasy settings, and Mathias slaps us around with that cold brutality as well as keeping Vanx as lively as ever. His details put us right in the action along with his motely crew of hunters, with beasts and beings of all kinds sharing the land with varying degrees of success. We've got epic serpent danger, Gargans, fae, minotaurs, mammoth shrews, warlocks, a witch to hunt and a pixie queen to save. Vanx is on his game, and so is Poops, who I must admit is my favorite character. Though I do love Chelda, too, and the vision of her with an elf nested in her chest will be with me always. That's what I love most about these books. The plotting and action is stellar, but it's the fun, the vibrant play with language and the sheer unconventional delight that makes them memorable and addicting. --Alex Prosper
