The pond near the edge of the meadow glistened silver-gold in the sunlight. Looking like a magic mirror, it sat in the midst of cattails and low bushes surrounded by a carpet of lemon-green, apple-green, forest-green grass. So begins The Friendship of Hesper and Rani, the story of a tadpole and a caterpillar who become friends and help each other through the concerns they experience as their bodies metamorphose into frog and butterfly. Wonderful realistic illustrations by Marsha Mello bring the characters to life. This book is an excellent resource for teachers because the life cycles of the leopard frog and skipper butterfly are accurately woven into a friendship tale written to help children grow, learn to deal with their emotions, and develop greater self-esteem. The Friendship of Hesper and Rani is truly a story for the child in everyone.
