It was the late nineteenth century. Hundreds of thousands of white men pursued the riches of the West seeking the promise of freedom, wide open spaces, abundant game, wealth, and a future. In their wake, thousands of Native American Indians and the millions of acres which had been their home were confiscated by force and by treaty. Tribes, once healthy and prosperous, now faced eradication. Cheyenne Chief, Morning Star, knew the lives of his people and their future depended on the children learning the way of this new world. A century later, his great grandson, Ted Rising Sun, a decorated Korean War veteran, overcame alcoholism, and then found his purpose. His foresight, like that of his great ancestor, gave him the strength to carry the fight for the Cheyenne children to the interior of the Senate chambers in Washington D.C. where in the 1970s he won a victory for all American Indian Tribes that changed the course of Indian education.
Cheyenne Rising Sun is the story of the last major battle of Cheyenne Chief, Morning Star and his people, told in parallel to the life of his great grandson, Ted Rising Sun. Both men were visionaries, warriors and inspiring leaders. Their stories are interwoven into an epic saga unfolding across the central plains from Oklahoma, north to Nebraska and Montana, with the fight culminating in Washington D.C. An important chapter of American History, Cheyenne Rising Sun is a tribute to the greatness of the American Indian.
