Fifteen-year-old Miles just wants to surf, but in the New South Wales coastal tourist-drawn town of Ulladulla, things are far from idyllic. Hidden beneath the surface of pristine beaches and a laid-back community is an underbelly of crime, racism and rage.
Miles tries to navigate his way through love, brotherhood and family, but he is drawn into a culture of toxic masculinity.
All the while, the Currowan bushfire rages, refusing to be subdued. During the 2019 summer, when everything changes, Miles must discover just how deep salt runs.

Mark Rafidi is a teacher, author and surfer. He lives, works and plays on Murramarang Country. His wipe-outs are far more an entertaining spectacle than when he's upright. Salt Runs Through is Mark's fourth novel, with The Photographer coming 2025. Previous works are Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, The Library at the Edge of the World, and Ishmael Oud: A father/son journey into occupied Palestine. Mark has a Doctorate Creative Arts (Creative Writing). Coming from mixed heritage, his stories explore identity, belonging, and the intricacies of Australian society.
