Born in Yorii, Saitama Prefecture in 1947, Hanawa worked as an illustrator before switching to manga in 1971. Initially specialising in works of eroguro in the magazine Garo, in the 1980s he shifted focus to tales of warriors and fantastic creatures set in the Edo and the Meiji periods. In 1998, the magazine AX published his autobiographical manga Doing Time, later collected by Fanfare, which recounts his three years in prison on charges of possessing illegal fire arms. This became a bestseller and received a film adaptation in 2002. Since then, Hanawa has returned to horror, and his 2014 horror short story collection Juso was a Jury selected work at the 2015 Japan Media Arts Festival
