Fiction. Translated from the Spanish by David Shook. In his autobiographies, celebrated Mexican innovator Mario Bellatín recounts his childhood as a bathhouse spectacle, the treatment of an illness suffered by his Sufi spiritual mentor, and his complicated search for a quality second-hand Renault 5. Like the Duchamp sculpture from which it takes its name, Mario Bellatín's THE LARGE GLASS deconstructs the very form it embraces, revealing the artifice of the autobiographical form as well as the importance of the stories we tell about ourselves.
Mario Bellatin is a Mexican Sufi with a collection of eccentric prosthetic arms to be used for different occasions. He is Mexico's leading younger novelist. THE LARGE GLASS (Eyewear Publishing, 2015) and BEAUTY SALON (City Light Books, 2009) are among his works translated into English. He is often spoken of as a future Nobel Prize winner, the winner of the 2015 Jose Maria Arguedas Priza, Cuba's most important prize for fiction. He was guest curator of Documenta 13.
David Shook grew up in Mexico City before studying endangered languages in Oklahoma and poetry at Oxford. He has translated Roberto Bolano's Infrarealist manifesto, indigenous Mexican poetry from the Isthmus Zapotec, and oral poetry by the Burundian Batwa. He served as Translator in Residence at Britain's Poetry Parnassus at The Southbank, in 2012. There he premiered his covertly shot documentary about Equatorial Guinean poet Marcelo Ensema Nsang. Shook lives in Los Angeles with his wife, the poet and pastor Syd Shook, where he edits Molossus and Phoneme Books.
