Verbal review - Professor Jardine did not write any comment about All Change 1919-1940, but not long before she passed away she did speak to me. Telling me, 'You've done it again Lilian. Keep recording your grandmother and mother's lives.

Reseña del editor

You could say Brighton was racier than ever in the 1920s. Certainly the young people chorused, 'Live for the day.' Clara and her daughter Dolly had no home of their own. The only roof over their heads was where they worked. By chance of her beautiful teeth Clara found a safe haven as house keeper for a Dental surgeon, but was soon facing a moral dilemma. Dolly became live-in personal maid to a lady who liked to be addressed as, 'Madam,.' Dolly, now known as Violet, that sounding classier was taught to anticipate Madam's needs briskly; knowing what jewellery to lay out and how to match her cigarette holders with the right smoking glove. Violet was on the receiving end of many throw outs making her a fashion plate among her set on her afternoon off, having fun on the ballroom floor and on the beach with their gramophone. The Wall Street Crash sent both mother and daughter's lives to change again. Clara experienced enough to take another live-in position on call 24 hours a day. For Dolly, life went from the absurd to the completely dotty. As a live-in maid in a 1930s declining middle class household, where she was forbidden to use the family's indoor washing and toilet facilities; only one half day off a week and not allowed out without her employers permission, was for a young woman hard to keep her sense of humour. Although, when an offer came that would take her away from a life in service, she hesitated. Clara advised her daughter, 'A plumber's job may be dirty but he will never be out of work.' Before my story leaves the 1930s I will by chance of location introduce my reader to the Forshaw family.
