With over thirty years' experience as a fishmonger in one of Cork's most popular tourist locations, Pat O'Connell is well known both at home and abroad. In The Fishmonger, he paints a vivid picture of the challenges and rewards of life as an English Market trader in a highly competitive and ever-changing environment. With warmth and humour, he recalls the early days of his mother's fish stall, its struggle for survival in recessionary times, as well as its eventual path to success. And, he describes in detail the infamous visit of Queen Elizabeth II to the English Market, which left a lasting impact not only on the market itself but also on his own life.

After working for two years as an official with Cork Corporation, Pat O'Connell joined his mother and brother full-time at his mother's fish stall, Kay O'Connell Fish Merchants, in the English Market in Cork. Today, in partnership with his brother, he runs the award-winning fish stall, as well as an oak-burning smokehouse in Bandon. In 2011, he became famous all around the globe when a photograph of himself and Queen Elizabeth II became one of the most iconic images of the monarch's historic state visit to the Republic of Ireland.
