Sinopsis

The Life of Flying Officer Alain Harvey is a family history of a young man from South Australia who became a Pathfinder pilot. Piecing together accounts from family, sources on Bomber Command, the Australian War Museum and Squadron records the book explains how and where Alain Harvey grew up and his early training days. It then focuses on the long process in training to be a heavy bomber pilot. It provides a detailed account of where Alain was stationed in RAF bases, the life of a Bomber Command recruit and his progression to the elite Pathfinder force: the target marking group in Bomber Command. The book is well illustrated with photos from the locations Alain served in and original wartime photos. It sheds new light on the events of 70 years ago. Although Alain’s life was tragically short his biography shows the real sacrifice recorded in his 35 Squadron motto: “We Act with one Accord.” The history is unusual in that it is not a survivor’s account but it helps us to understand the sacrifices made by the 44,000 airmen from Bomber Command who did not return.
