Prof. Akhtar Kalam has been at Victoria University, Melbourne since 1985 and a former Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science. He completed his MS and Ph.D. at the University of Oklahoma, USA and the University of Bath, UK in 1975 and 1981 respectively. He had his service with Ingersoll Rand and other electrical manufacturers; held teaching appointments at the Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education, Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. Prof. Kalam has been actively engaged in the teaching of Energy Systems to undergraduates, postgraduates and providing professional courses to the industry both in Australia and overseas. His major areas of interests are power system analysis, communication control, protection and cogeneration systems. He regularly offers professional development courses on Power System Protection and Cogeneration & Gas Turbine Operation to the Energy Supply Association of Australia (ESAA) and Australian Power Institute (API) and also runs postgraduate distance education programme on Power System Protection for the ESAA. He has conducted research, provided industrial consultancy and published 327 publications on his area of expertise and written 27 books in the area. Professor Kalam is a Fellow of EA, IET and a member of IEEE. Prof. D P Kothari, Ph.D., at present is Vice Chancellor of VIT University, Vellore, India. His previous assignments were that of Professor at Centre for Energy Studies, IIT Delhi; Director in charge, IIT Delhi (2005); Deputy Director (Administration), IIT Delhi (2003-06); and Head, Centre for Energy Studies, IIT Delhi (1995-97). Dr. Kothari's fields of specialization include Optimal Hydro-thermal Scheduling, Unit Commitment, Maintenance Scheduling, Communication and Control in Electric Power Systems, Energy Conservation and Power Quality. He has contributed extensively to these areas, guided 30 Ph.Ds, 60 M.Techs., authored 20 books in Power Systems and allied areas and published/ presented 535 research papers in various journals/conferences. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and holds professional membership of different institutions. He has received several awards including the life time achievement award for 2005 in Engineering.
The restructuring of the electric utility industry has generated the need for a mechanism that can successfully coordinate the different entities in a power market, enabling them to communicate effectively and efficiently, and to perform optimally and reliably. "Power System Protection and Communications" is an important book to primarily address the fundamental issues on electrical protection which is essential in understanding the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. There is always a need to provide education in the theory and practice of protection engineering, for engineers and technical personnel, because of its importance in design and operation of the power system. The definitions of the individual components of distributed functions are presented in detail, including the different possible allocation of sub-functions and functional elements in physical devices. Secondly, the book examines in detail the importance of communication between power systems-discussing relevant issues such as the protocols, middleware, communication architecture, information embedded power systems and fibre optic network infrastructure.
