This book is the story of a marriage, of passions lost and found in a setting of controversy about genetic engineering. Fram and Paul meet on a C.N.D march in the 1960s. After the birth of their unplanned child they become sexually estranged and lose the joys that illuminated their lives. Paul gives up his plans to work in Africa and instead takes up a position with a Research and Development company involved in the drugs industry, he soon becomes concerned about the companies use of genetically modified bacteria. Fran meanwhile becomes submerged in motherhood, but becomes alarmed when a male rival in Paul's firm begins to harass her and she begins to fear that her husband had become involved in something dishonourable, despite warnings to leave the past well alone Fran begins a journey in an attempt to discover the truth about her husband's life and what he is getting up to.
