St Patrick is the first identifiable person in Irish history that wrote down his story. This English translation by Padraig McCarthy is a succinct and accurate rendering of his turbulent life. Composed in the fifth century and preserved in a Latin manuscript dating from the 800s onwards, St Patrick’s Confessio tells of the patron saint's capture and slavery in Ireland. It not only makes him the first Irish writer, but it is the very oldest text to be written in Ireland that is still extant. This pocket-sized book will be of interest to the curious reader as well as to the academic researcher.
