In this oral history of the U-boats of the Great War, Lowell Thomas introduces many of the great pioneering submariners such as Hersing, Steinbrink, Hashagen and the most successful submarine commander of all time, the remarkable von Arnauld. Their stories relate how the U-Boat War was nearly won, then lost in a conning-tower view of the great struggle for supremacy of the shipping lanes.

One of the most recognisable figures of his time, Lowell Thomas rose to world fame as the man who met T.E. Lawrence in Arabia, filmed the Bedouin in their war with the Turks and by penning the best-selling With Lawrence in Arabia made Lawrence a household name too. Many books followed, none more remarkable than Raiders of the Deep, a series of tales gathered from Germany's surviving U-Boat men. As Thomas admitted, he avoided controversy and judgement over rights and wrongs, but instead produced "tales of sheer adventure." A reason for the book's enduring popularity. Lowell Thomas went on to narrate Fox Movietone newsreels and to cover World War Two from Luxembourg to Iwo Jima. Later, Thomas returned to travelling the world and bringing it to life for a now worldwide audience. In 1949, he and his son, Lowell Thomas, Jr., became the first persons to film the Dalai Lama. He was working right up to his death in 1981.
