This sequel to "The Inner Consultation" explores the "Icarus factor" in vocational training - why some gratifying traineeships take off while others remain earthbound and unrewarding, and how trainers can encourage trainees towards their personal versions of excellence. The first part explores the principles of good teaching, proposing apprenticeship as an appropriate model, while the remainder of the book offers a resolution of vocational training's paradox, that the professional values most esteemed in young doctors are those least amenable to teaching based on a formal curriculum. The book offers many new ideas, techniques and educational tools.
