This book contains 41 papers in seven sections reflecting on various aspects of coastal environment and water quality. Section 1 deals with coastal water pollution which has received considerable attention in recent decades. Section 2 looks at saltwater intrusion which is of fundamental importance for the management of coastal aquifers. Section 3 covers coastal water eutrophication. This subject takes on an added significance in light of growing hypoxia due to nutrient enrichment in the Gulf of Mexico. Section 4 deals with best management practices currently being employed for water quality management. Taken together, these first four sections constitute the building blocks for water quality modeling, which is the subject of Section 5. Extending this discussion further, Section 6 encompasses coastal ecology, wetlands and environment. In conclusion, Section 7 presents some of the impacts of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Dr. Y. Jun Xu is Associate Professor at Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Renewable Natural Resources. His research interest are: Hydrologic and biogeochemical processes and modeling, watersheds, water quality, global climate change, carbon and nitrogen cycles, wetlands. Dr Xu received his B.S. in Beijing from the Forestry University, Beijing, China; his M.S. from the University of Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany; and his Ph.D. from University of Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany. Dr. Xu is a highly respected and regarded expert in Hydrologic and Biogeochemical Processes and Modeling; Watersheds; Water Quality; Global Climate Change; Carbon and Nitrogen Cycles; and Wetlands.Dr. Vijay P. Singh holds the Arthur K. Barton Endowed Professorship in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University, U. S.A. He obtained a Ph. D. in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University, and a D. Sc. in Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He is the author, editor or co-editor of numerous publications, book chapters, journal articles, and conference proceedings papers and technical reports, in the area of water and environmental resources. He is Editor-in-Chief of Water Science and Technology Library Book Series and is a member of 14 journal editorial boards dealing with water resources and environment. Currently, Professor Singh serves as President of the American Institute of Hydrology (AIH), President of G. B. S. Board, and President of the Foundation for Aggrandizement of Rural Areas (FARA); and has served on numerous committees of professional organizations and panels at national and international levels. Another unique area that Professor Singh has been making a mark is public service and education. About seven years ago he established a school for imparting quality education, virtually free of cost, in his native village near Agra, India. He has been funding the school entirely through his own funds. For his scientific contributions, he has received numerous local, state, national and international wards. He is a fellow of ASCE, AWRA, IE, IAH, ISAE, and IWRS. He has also been elected Academician by the Georgia Fazisi Academy, Republic of Georgia. He holds membership in 15 professional associations.
The concept for this book preceded Katrina and Rita hurricanes by 2 years and came about because experts in the field of coastal hydrology recognized that coastal areas were vulnerable to destruction from nature's forces. It is a 'must' read for any professional involved with coastal hydrology management, including governments, consulting firms, and university instructors that wish to keep informed of current processes.
