Ivan Scott was born in Iowa City, Iowa. He earned a bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary, and master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a recipient of a Fulbright fellowship and studied at the University of Paris, and spent nearly four decades as a teacher, serving as a professor at the University of Toledo. His academic work focused on European history, specifically French and Italian history, and the history of the papacy.
