The "Remington System": Originally patented by Joseph Rider, the action relies on a pivoting breechblock locked in place by a separately pivoting hammer that wedges securely behind it. Despite being overlooked by the standard U.S. military at the time, it became the standard service rifle for countries ranging from Spain and France to Egypt and Denmark.
