This is a concise exposition of the principles and practice of schooling horses in the classical tradition. Although the system described should appeal particularly to dressage enthusiasts, it can be employed by any rider who wishes to develop riding skills and a horse's potential. Based on the author's observations of the world's top trainers, the system described aims to make the horse more versatile and obedient. Topics discussed include the essentials of riding and training, balance, resistance, progressive lateral work, flying changes, the extremes of collection, training procedures, remedial schooling and influential riding masters.

When Michael Stevens first began riding he was struck by the contrast between the lack of schooling of many of the horses used in riding establishments, and the training possibilities described in books written by the equestrian masters. With great assiduousness he decided to delve into the objects an methods of the classical school in a quest for a greater understanding of the subject. As a result, several years later, his first book - A Classical Riding Notebook - came into being. Michael regularly schools a variety of horses and teaches private students. He admits to having a taste for competition and is at his happiest when riding in an arena, trying to improve a horse's way of going. He trained his own lippizaner gelding to advanced level.
