This is the first English translation of Joseph Roth's portrayal of the Jews of Eastern Europe: their poverty, their towns and trades, their feast days and the mysticism of their rabbis. Roth was conscious that this was a community living under the threat of extermination.

Joseph Roth (1894-1939) was the great elegist of the cosmopolitan, tolerant and doomed Central European culture that flourished in the dying days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Born into a Jewish family in Galicia, on the eastern edge of the empire, he was a prolific political journalist and novelist. On Hitler's assumption of power, he was obliged to leave Germany for Paris, where he died in poverty a few years later. His books include What I Saw, Job, The White Cities, The String of Pearls, The Emperor's Tomb and The Radetzky March, all published by Granta Books.
Michael Hofmann is a poet and German translator. His most recent collection of poems is One Lark, One Horse. He is a Granta contributing editor.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Granta's republication of Joseph Roth's novels has created a new generation of readers for this great novelist. Roth was also celebrated as a journalist, and The Wandering Jews is his portrait of the Jews of Eastern Europe: of their poverty, their towns and trades, their feast days and mystical rabbis. This was a community living under the shadow of extermination, and Roth was aware of the threat. Michael Hofmann, an award-winning poet, has again translated a neglected classic. In the last years of Weimar Germany, Roth set out to explore the Jewish communities scattered across Europe. He brought back varying reports and witnessed the twilight years of the shtetls and schools of Eastern Europe, and foresaw the dangers posed by extreme German nationalism.
