For some time it seemed as though the GM debate in the UK had been quashed completely in the face of unequivocal consumer disapproval for the new technology. However, recent surveys have suggested that sections of the population are becoming more open-minded with regards to genetically-modified food. In addition, the debate has been brought to the surface once more by recent developments including a genetically-modified salmon which can grow to full size in half the time of an ordinary salmon, EC approval of the first GM crop in a decade and the creation of GM chickens which could prevent the spread of bird flu.
