North American farmland continues to be lost to nonfarm use (40 million acres and counting since 1970). This trend at the rural/urban fringe is the fulcrum of the debate over the desired shape of the landscape into 2YK. A dozen original papers discuss features of the agricultural land preservation strategies adopted by every state and provincial government in the US and Canada, per four major themes: the spatial structure/organizational form of the "contested countryside", land conversion protection policies, local rural-urban relationships given often divergent values, and non-governmental organizations as the most rapidly expanding area of environmental action.
