Joseph RUDYARD KIPLING has come to epitomise the Raj for the Anglophile imagination. The empire is gone and Kipling is gone but long live Kipling. India, the centrepiece and "jewel" of the lost empire, continues to have a special place in the hearts and minds of many in the English speaking world- in Britain and among other members of the old and modern Commonwealth, besides the USA, the biggest English speaking country. Marking Kipling's 150th birth anniversary year,Subhash Chopra takes a fresh look at the legacy of the man who has swayed the hearts and minds of generations of English speaking people around the globe.

After migrating from Pakistan to india at the time of partition of India,Chopra had his university education in New Delhi where he began his journalistic career at the Indian Express. Four years on he moved to Britain where he worked on newspapers up and down the country for nearly 25 years, including a long spell at The Times, London, on its business news desk. His earlier books include India and Britannia - An Abiding Affair - Essays and Studies in English Literature - Partition, Jihad and Peace and South Asia after Bin Laden.
