The eighth title in Midland's highly successful Irish Railway Pictorial series, explores the complex and fascinating network of railways found in Ireland's largest city, Dublin. This is explored in a collection of superb black and white photographs, mostly taken during the period from 1945 to the present day. Dublin had five main railway stations and a host of lines connecting them, with many further stations serving the suburbs of the city. There were also extensive networks of lines in the port of Dublin, serving Guiness' brewery and Ireland's largest railway works at Inchicore. The book covers an area from Drogheda and Navan on the former Great Northern system in the north, to Bray in the south. The old Great Southern & Western main line is explored as far south as Kildare and on the western route out of the city, the ex-Midland Great Western line as far as Maynooth, is covered. Other sections deal with goods and industrial lines in the city and the tramways which once linked the city's stations. As well as offering a nostalgic look at the railways of Dublin in the past, the book examines the increasingly optimistic future for the city's railways as gridlock on the roads has given them an increasingly important and vital role in keeping the city on the move, as exemplified by the new tramway system which is currently under construction.
